The year 1980 was, in many respects, the best of Saxon\u2019s career. Both Wheels Of Steel and the follow-up, Strong Arm Of The Law (released later that year), were big chart successes in Britain, the latter reaching No.11. The early 80s New Wave Of British Heavy Metal produced a pair of future superstars in Iron Maiden and Def Leppard. Saxon might have had the same success as those two bands, but they did just as much to put that scene on the map.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the space of just over 18 months, these working class heroes from Barnsley, South Yorkshire released three albums that would define these new movement: 1980\u2019s Wheels Of Steel<\/em>, the same year\u2019s Strong Arm Of The Law<\/em> and 1981\u2019s Denim And Leather<\/em>. All three are NWOBHM landmarks, but it\u2019s Wheels Of Steel<\/em> that stands a whisker above the others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow do I view that record?\u201d says Saxon frontman Biff Byford. \u201cIt\u2019s obviously a classic. But, more than that, it saved our career.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The roots of Saxon date back to the mid-70s, and a band named S.O.B., founded by guitarist Graham Oliver and bassist Steve Dawson. Over the next few years, their line-up shifted until it settled around Oliver and Dawson plus Biff (born Paul Byford), second guitarist Paul Quinn and drummer Pete Gill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As their sound toughened up, they expanded their name from S.O.B. to the blunter Son Of A Bitch, though that name was jettisoned when they finally signed a deal with French label Carrere in 1978, who pointed out that it might get in the way of airplay. Grudgingly, Son Of A Bitch became Saxon. That was the name under which they released their self-titled debut album in the summer of 1979. Saxon was arguably the first NWOBHM album, although it didn\u2019t set the world on fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat you have to remember is that the first album had only sold about 12,000 copies, mainly to hardcore Son Of A Bitch fans,\u201d says Biff. \u201cAnd to be honest, it wasn\u2019t very good. Carrere made it plain to us that unless we did a lot better on the next record, we\u2019d be dropped. They weren\u2019t looking to sell huge amounts of copies, just for a big improvement. So we were under pressure from the start.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The band got the message. They decamped from Barnsley to deepest Wales to knuckle down and start work on the follow-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was a really wacky time,\u201d laughs the singer. \u201cOur management packed us off to a hut in the Welsh mountains, with about \u00a315 between us. It was a weird area, because we were surrounded by loads of vegans living in tepees! We used to wind them up by ordering loads of meat to be delivered. We\u2019d be in the hut with all these people just staring at us through the window, completely bemused.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When they weren\u2019t provoking the locals, Saxon managed to get a decent amount of work done. The first two songs they wrote in Wales would set the tone for the whole album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe got Wheels Of Steel<\/em> and 747 (Strangers In The Night)<\/em> done quite quickly,\u201d says Biff. \u201cAnd then everything just seemed to flow. By the end we knew that we were in a state of grace. The songs we had were not only the best we could have done, but perfect for the time. I think every successful band has that moment when they just get in the zone, and for us it arrived in Wales.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the time they left the vegans to their lentils, Saxon had enough songs for their make-or-break album. They were booked into London\u2019s Rampart Studios \u2013 owned by The Who \u2013 with producer Peter Hinton, who had signed them to Carrere, and engineer Will Reid-Dick, who the band took the piss out of mercilessly on account of his name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe knew what we wanted, and that was the energy we had onstage,\u201d says Biff of the album they were making. \u201cWorking with Peter turned out to be a brilliant decision. He got us exactly what we wanted. The album wasn\u2019t full of effects, but was raw, live and right in your face. It had a real punk edge, and that made this stand out from so much else at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the pressure on to deliver a killer album, the band didn\u2019t mess around. Even the odd technical SNAFUs couldn\u2019t stop them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe had a power cut in the studio one day while we were recording 747 (Strangers In The Night)<\/em>,\u201d says Biff. \u201cThere was a back-up generator, but it didn\u2019t kick in right away. In that time, the tape on the track we were cutting slightly stretched. If you listen carefully, the drums and bass slightly slow down at one point. In those days, you literally had to cut the tape up to remove anything, which could be very messy. So we left it in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their discipline in the studio didn\u2019t prevent them from enjoying their down time in London. There was plenty of time to sample some of the less salubrious delights the capital had to offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery night, we\u2019d leave the studio, and go to a porn club, a strip bar, or an after-hours drinking place,\u201d says Biff. \u201cWe\u2019d pick up these girls, and take them back to the bed-and-breakfast place where we were staying. We worked hard, and we played hard!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the time they finished recording the album, titled Wheels Of Steel<\/em>, the band knew they were sitting on something special. Fusing the power of metal with the energy of punk, songs such as Motorcycle Man<\/em> and the title track (love letters to motorbikes and the freedom of the open road), 747 (Strangers In The Night)<\/em> (a love story partly inspired by a true life event where a plane tried to land in New York during a city wide blackout), the rat-a-tatting Machine Gun<\/em> and the melodic Suzie Hold On<\/em> were instant anthems with grease and dirt under their fingernails. The disappointment of Saxon\u2019s debut album was quickly forgotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere was a buzz about the record even before it came out,\u201d says Biff. \u201cCarrere were distributed by Warner Bros., who were having big success with Van Halen, so they knew how to sell metal. I was taken round the pressing plant while they were getting Wheels Of Steel<\/em> ready and was amazed at how many copies they were pressing up \u2013 it seemed like millions. There was a feeling that we were gonna happen \u2013 and big.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On February 2, 1980, Saxon showcased songs from the as-yet-unreleased new albums at a half-full gig at London\u2019s Electric Ballroom. By the time the album was released two months later on April 3 (a couple of weeks before Iron Maiden\u2019s self-titled debut), Saxon were arguably the biggest new metal band in Britain. Their rise was rubber-stamped by a memorable appearance on Top Of The Pops<\/em>, performing Wheels Of Steel<\/em>\u2019s title track, the album\u2019s first single.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t believe how much of a difference that made,\u201d says Biff. \u201cWe had a club tour booked, and suddenly the queues were going round the block. I think the combination of all the hard work we\u2019d done in 1979, supporting Mot\u00f6rhead on their Bomber tour, and the TV exposure just made things happen. It was our time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wheels Of Steel<\/em> single peaked at No.21 in the UK, while follow-up 747 (Strangers In The Night)<\/em> reaching No.13. The album itself made it to No.5 in the UK charts. But there was an unexpected side to their newfound fame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI had to move out of my house,\u201d sighs the singer. \u201cMy girlfriend at the time couldn\u2019t handle what was going on. There were fans turning up and climbing the drainpipe. And, on one occasion, about 40 people were in my garden, just chanting Wheels Of Steel<\/em>. It was insane.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The album\u2019s success meant Biff found himself in some unusual situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019ve been on TV, suddenly everyone wants your opinion on anything,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve just found a tape of a radio debate I was on in 1981, talking about headbanging with a university professor and a policeman. It\u2019s fucking daft. I might have to include this as a bonus track on a future release.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the wake of Wheels Of Steel<\/em>, Saxon had the wind in their sails. Just seven months later, in November 1980, they released their third album, Strong Arm Of The Law<\/em> (they appeared at the inaugural Monsters Of Rock festival at Castle Donington in between). Ten months after that they put out Denim And Leather<\/em>, completing one of metal\u2019s great trilogies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those three albums mark the commercial highpoint of Saxon\u2019s career. They survived the collapse of the NWOBHM unscathed, although none of the albums they released in during the rest of the 80s or early 1990s captured the same magic. A series of line-up changes – including the departures of drummer Pete Gill in 1981, bassist Steve Dawson in 1988 and guitarist Graham Quinn in 1995 \u2013 could have derailed the band, but Biff Byford was unwilling to let the band go: he still leads it from the front to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe were big in Britain, no argument,\u201d Biff says of the period around Wheels Of Steel<\/em>. \u201cProbably the biggest of our generation of metal bands at the time. We\u2019d done it through hard graft and killer songs; none of that trendy image rubbish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                Hardly had “Wheels of Steel” been released before Saxon began recording “Strong Arm of the Law”. The record company considered the band a fad, says Biff Byford, who here publishes the lyrics for this classic album from 1980.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                HEAVY METAL THUNDER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – We wrote “Strong Arm of the Law” inside a friend’s barn in Norfolk, says singer Biff Byford. We had a four-channel Revox reel-to-reel tape recorder to help us. We wrote, recorded, listened, rewrote, recorded again and so on. My suggestion to name the album “Heavy Metal Thunder” was voted down by the record company. In their ears, “Strong Arm of the Law” was the given single. Therefore, the album should also be called that, they argued. Now that song never became a big hit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

                They should have listened to you. “Heavy Metal Thunder” is one of the strongest opening songs ever.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – Yes, and that’s also the idea of \u200b\u200bthe song. We wanted to open with something idiotically fast. In fact, we scrapped the first take because we didn’t think it was fast enough. The final version is three or four bpm faster. That’s not an insignificant difference. There’s not much to say about the melody. It’s simple but conveys the message effectively. We wrote the song based on our experiences as the opening act on the Mot\u00f6rhead tour in 1979. Our task was to get people on their feet and raise the motivation of the audience. Which we also succeeded in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                Paying tribute to the heavy metal culture and your own place in it is something of a parade branch for Saxon.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – Yes, “Heavy metal thunder” and “Denim and leather” are the crowd songs above all others. The lyrics give voice to an entire generation. The chorus is extremely strong. “Fill your heads with heavy metal thunder” and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                Did you get the title from Steppenwolf’s “Born to be wild”?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – I don’t know if that’s where the phrase was coined, but it’s possible. Something tells me I’d also come across it in a book about the American Civil War, in a poem of sorts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                TO HELL AND BACK AGAIN<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – The opening is a bit reminiscent of “747 (Strangers in the Night)” from “Wheels of Steel”. You’re thrown right into the song and the theme riff. An unusual beginning. We had some weird things going for us then. Like “747 (Strangers in the Night)” kicking off with a guitar solo. “To hell and back again” is definitely about a prisoner awaiting his death sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                It’s worth noting that this is two years before Iron Maiden’s “Hallowed be thy name”.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – That’s what happens when you listen to each other. We ourselves were into Judas Priest and Wishbone Ash and were certainly colored by it. The story in “To hell and back again” is based on a letter we received from an American prisoner who wanted to tell us how much he liked the “Wheels of steel” album. It got my thoughts going. I tried to imagine what it would be like to be innocently sentenced to death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                You sing “to hell and back again”. How should that be interpreted?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – I imagine a scenario where the person is taken from their cell and taken to the execution room, but at the last moment they are told that the sentence will be reconsidered. Many in the American prison system are in that situation and would probably prefer to just get it over with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                STRONG ARM OF THE LAW<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                “Stop, get out\/We are the strong arm of the law” – where were you stopped?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – In the middle of London Bridge. The police winked at us. Just sliding around in an American was suspicious in their eyes. A common trick at the time was to sneak a pillbox or something like that into the door pocket and then pretend to find it: “Well, look at you, what have we got here then?” The purpose of the charade was to provoke a confession. A dirty trick that didn’t work on us. By the way, we had nothing to seize. We weren’t dealing in any harder drugs than weed. We left that part to the pros in Mot\u00f6rhead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                The police thought you were easy prey?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – Yes, that’s what they thought about everyone with long hair and jeans. We fit their image of a thug. At the police station they probably had a profile of a perpetrator who looked like me or Steve Dawson (bassist in Saxon 1977-1986). It certainly didn’t look like Joe Elliott (Def Leppard). In the 70s we had police checks here and there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                Have you received comments about the song from professional traffic police officers over the years?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – Yes, actually. We have a lot of fans in the police force and that particular song is especially loved there. It’s almost considered an anthem in their circles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                TAKING YOUR CHANCES<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – Our least played song from the album, you say? Yes, but we’ve ripped it off as part of a medley. The lyrics are about throwing things away and trying your luck. A theme that recurs in many Saxon songs. I don’t think it’s about any specific person. As is often the case, it is a mixture of autobiography and fiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                I like the clean, reverb-drenched plucked guitar in the chorus the best, which creates depth effects.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – It’s certainly lovely. We were experimenting quite a bit with guitar sounds around that time. For “Strong Arm of the Law” we had both more time and resources to test our ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                But having said that, you started recording the album the month after “Wheels of Steel” was released in April 1980.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – I think the record company and management saw us as a fad with a lifetime on a single album. The consensus was that we should squeeze out another album before people forgot about us. Talk about narrow-minded. Nothing wrong with a high production rate, but we should have toured harder for “Wheels of Steel”, in the US but also in other parts of the world. If we had done that, the album would have had a greater impact globally. Both albums were recorded in the Who studio Ramport over a three-week period. Maybe even three and a half weeks for “Strong arm of the law”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                20,000 FT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                Here we have a song where the tempo really matches the theme.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – Yes, the fact is that I attach great importance to that aspect, that riff and lyrics go hand in hand. If I’m going to write about a fighter pilot in a wild flight, I need something fast-paced. Supersonic even. In the US I had read a newspaper article about a certain pilot who took LSD up in a fighter plane. Or a former pilot, if I remember correctly. Probably a war veteran who wanted to have some fun. The story was so fascinating that I wrote lyrics about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                Did you read “Biggles” as a child?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – I certainly did. “Biggles” was great as a cigarette. I also liked black and white war films. The Korean War was exciting because it was largely fought with early jet aircraft models. They were also stylish, with decorative thunderbolts on the sides I think. Nigel Glockler (drums) is actually a bigger aviation fan than I am. He has been up in such planes at least a couple of times. For me, “20,000 ft” is mostly a cheesy story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                Yes, because you compare breaking the sound barrier to having sex.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – Yes, exactly. There was something about sitting high up in the sky in his little hole. In the song he is 20,000 feet above the ground instead of the more reasonable 30,000 and that’s because it simply sounds better. I don’t know why. Another example is “747” which sounds better than “737”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                Have you always had an ear for words and their different denominations and phonetic qualities?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – Absolutely. In a song lyrics, words and syllables are everything. If I hear a melody in my head, I immediately start figuring out how to put it into lyrics. What kind of words fit into the structure and so on. As a rule, it is a crucial part of the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                HUNGRY YEARS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – Here I am singing about ourselves. The band that comes from the north down to London to try their luck. Although it could really be about any band. It is a classic rock’n’roll story about going to a minor, getting scammed out of money and encountering one boring thing after another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                Although it ends happily with the lines “they’ve left the hungry years”. When did you turn that corner with Saxon?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – Yes, it was around that time. If we really left it behind us. I’m not so sure. After all, it’s just a lyric. Both “Wheels of steel” and “Strong arm of the law” were great albums by all accounts. They gave us a lot of credit in terms of songwriting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                You guys dusted off the song for the “Thunderbolt” tour that started in 2018, right?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – Yes, it’s one of those songs that we pretty much never play but that really gets people going. “To hell and back again” also falls into that category. In terms of the number of plays and downloads, it’s a fan favorite, but it’s far from always the case that we manage to fit it into the set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                I haven’t thought about it before, but the guitar loop that appears halfway into the song feels like it could have been the model for Metallica’s “For whom the bell tolls”.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – Absolutely. There’s a lot of Saxon in Metallica. Stealing? Not at all, they’re just influenced by us. Take “Seek and destroy” for example. The riff is Saxon to the core. But that’s how influences work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                SIXTH FORM GIRLS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                Now we’re stepping down into the rarities room.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – Yes, this song had been around for a while before we put it on tape. A rascally boyish story about how 17-18-year-old schoolgirls sneak out of a dormitory window to have fun with the working-class sons in town. The inspiration comes partly from the film series “St Trinian’s”. It’s bush humor of the same brand as the “Carry on” series. If it even passes as humor today. It’s not very good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                Both musically and lyrically it deviates from the Saxon formula.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – Yes, but it has a punk energy. The closest reference is the band Heavy Metal Kids, if you’re familiar with them? Their music was characterized by a cheeky and punk attitude but at the same time had pop qualities. We actually toured together in the 70s during the Son Of A Bitch years. “Sixth form girls” is a direct result of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                DALLAS 1 PM<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – The assassination of John F Kennedy was a monumental event in the 60s and I remember the impression it made on my young teenage self. I had never seen anything like it before. Not that there was much moving image of the actual assassination. The FBI was very secretive. In “Dallas 1 PM” we get on the conspiracy trail with three shots fired. What really happened we will probably never know, but it is common knowledge that FBI Director J Edgar Hoover and Kennedy hated each other. We actually visited the assassination site during the US tour for “Wheels of steel”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                To be Saxon at this time it is an uncharacteristically epic song. Almost two minutes pass before the vocals enter.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – It’s a massive build, yes. With two riffs played in each speaker. I know that Kiss are big Saxon fans and that the bassist, what’s his name again?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                Uh, Gene Simmons?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                – That’s right, yes. He’s produced quite a bit in his day and I happen to know that he often plays “Dallas 1 PM” for his prot\u00e9g\u00e9s as an example of successful songwriting. That it’s possible to have two riffs going at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
