There are many misconceptions about this recording. First, the name Beat Club. The Beat Club program ran from 1965 to 1972 (See: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beat-Club). The “Beat Club” was succeeded in 1972 by “Musikladen”. A number of people who worked at the “Beat Club” continued at “Musikladen”. At the end of the seventies the NDR broadcasted a number of live concerts, recorded in “Studio 3” in Bremen, under the name “Musikladen Live”, including with The Ramones, Blondie etc. In 1980/1981 there are also several bands (including eg Iron Maiden) recorded live in Bremen, again in Studio 3. Whether this program was ultimately also a Musikladen Live Special and was also broadcast under this name remains unclear. Nowhere in the announcement or credits does the name of the program appear. To make it even more unclear, the program in the Netherlands was sometimes announced in the TV Guide as “Beat Club”.

Several shots of the audience during the recording clearly show the logo of “Musikladen” at the back of the hall.

It is therefore more than likely that this is indeed the program “Musikladen” and certainly not “Beat Club”. The program was broadcast by various German channels such as SWF, WDR and NDR. Often this was done in an edited form. Song order was changed, announcements dropped and the total was reduced to 25/30 minutes. This recording of Saxon was broadcast several times in 1981. Thus there are several broadcast dates such as July 07, 1981, but also May 15, 1981. And this is how this data is created and it starts to lead a life of its own. Because none of these dates is of course the date of admission.

But what then is the actual date of admission? So if you watch and listen to the unadulterated total version, around 19.30 minutes, you immediately notice the same thing as the recording of Antwerp 29 March 1981. Here too the song “And The Bands Played On” is announced with the following: “The next song we’re gonna do, is a song, it’s a new single released this week etc ”. In other words: This recording also dates from the end of March / beginning of April 1981. And that is correct in that respect with the tour schedule, as Saxon toured in Germany at the beginning of April. But the story goes even further…. Now there is still a tour info sheet, Was once offered for sale on eBAY and has a so-called so-called ‘watermark’ so it is not completely legible. First of all, Antwerp (Borgerhout) has been added by hand, which we know is from Sunday 29 March 1981. So the following is not very legible but looks suspiciously like Bremen. There is also a not legible number for what almost must be March 30, 1981, as Düsseldorf and Cologne (Mülheim) on April 1 and 2, 1981 are easy to decipher. Between March 30 and April 1 is of course the 31st and I think it is indeed in between, with an indecipherable scratch behind it. And I think the last letter is written “HO” (the rest is covered by the digital watermark…) which I think stands for “Home”. All in all, the conclusion is that it could hardly be otherwise that the TV performance in Bremen was on March 30, 1981.

Around the Summer of 81, Saxon went into the studios to record the Denim and Leather album. This was done is Aquaris Studios in Geneva (Switzerland) and the Polar Studios in Stockholm (Sweden). De additional vocals for the title track was done in England with members of the Fan club.

1981, Sept 30: Alabama Munich [Last concert of Pete Gill with Saxon]

This is an important moment in the Saxon history. It is really the last time with Pete Gill. It was a German tv show at the Theatre fabric in Munich were they played a short set. There was another UK band (The Undertones) fronted by Fergal Sharky.

Alabama Hall was a concert and theatre venue in Munich which was also used to broadcast the television programme Live aus dem Alabama. It was originally part of a military depot.
